Advent Day 2

Dec 4, 2023

December 4, 2023

Matthew 3:1-3

1 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming,

2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

3 This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.’”

JOY

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I love the color, the lights, the songs, the smells and memories. But most of all, I love that it is the birthday of the Savior of the world. This time of year requires a lot of preparation for me! I decorate a tree in every room, I put JOY in every corner, and I make sure there is no doubt this is a celebration for Jesus. There is a great deal of preparation that goes into all this decorating.

That is the superficial stuff. How about the heart? What does it take to make “His” path straight? What does God require of me? John the Baptist was telling the world that there was one coming who was the Messiah so get ready to receive him. Micah 6:8 says, “ He has shown you, O mortal what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and t walk humbly with your God.” That path is the one that leads straight to our hearts.

For many years now my house decorating has had one theme – JOY! That word is in every room multiple times, and the grandchildren love walking through the rooms counting the number of JOYs in the house. The joy of the season has become something much deeper than the happiness and contentment that we connect with the word. It has become a touch stone for my life and my way of living every day. First, J- reminds me that I must center my heart on Jesus. I must follow Him daily and stay in close contact with Him always. I know that I am on that straight path when I am serving O – others. And when I am doing those first two things I find that Y – You find your purpose.

Preparation is important in all aspects of life, but no more so than our faith journey. My purpose is to please God and make straight the path for not only myself but to encourage others. Like John the Baptist we must show the world that “ the one whose sandals we are not worthy to carry” has come that all might have abundant life in Him. Live with JOY this Advent Season and prepare for the miracle of the Christ child!

Prayer: Lord, we come before you today filled with gratitude for the Christ child. Prepare our hearts to receive your love. Give us eyes to see the injustice in the world and the voice to speak out. Where there is a need for mercy give us hearts that overflow with enough love to offer it and always Lord be our Shepherd and teach us how to walk humbly with You. Let JOY fill our lives this Advent Season so much that it overflows into every space we find ourselves this day. In Jesus Name. Amen
